About us

Lancaster County is located in the north central area of South Carolina and is approximately 40 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina and 60 miles north of Columbia, South Carolina. Lancaster County covers more than 550 square miles and has an estimated population of 96,016. The county comprises three incorporated communities – Lancaster, Kershaw, Heath Springs, and Van Wyck. The County seat is Lancaster.
The County has a Council-Administrator form of government with seven council members. Each of those seven council members holds a term of four years. The County’s fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30.

Lancaster County is launching its Civics 101 program this year! The first course in the 10-week program will begin August 17. Civics 101 is a citizens academy designed to educate Lancaster County residents on the inner-workings of their county government through an engaging and interactive program.
